Craniosacral therapy is a gentle, hands-on treatment which works with the central nervous system, helping to relieve aches and pains, stresses and strains in the body. It is particularly suitable for treating conditions in newborn babies as there is no manipulation involved. The therapist subtly releases the compressions and restrictions that can cause colic, sleep and feeding issues, head shape and neck problems (including a preference for looking only in one direction), and many other infant issues. The number of treatments depends on the individual client but many babies show marked improvement after three sessions.
Craniosacral therapy is positively indicated for pregnant women and new mothers, whose physical and emotional tranformation to motherhood is gently supported by this
Both babies and new mothers can also benefit from cranial treatment to help them recover from traumatic birth experiences. The therapist will often treat the mother/baby pair together, promoting healing and encouraging bonding, supporting a solid and loving start to the new family relationship.
BABY MASSAGE AND REFLEXOLOGY
I have been teaching baby massage since 2007, privately and through Parents Centres throughout Auckland. I have more recently added baby reflexology to my skill set as a complement to my practice. These skills, when practised by parents, are a powerful bonding tool as well as stimulating physical and neurological development in the infant. In addition, massage and reflexology can help with digestive and respiratory discomforts. I have taught thousands of parents to massage their babies, supporting their growing confidence in handling their new baby and in responding to their needs.
POSTNATAL CARE AND SELF CARE FOR NEW MUMS
Complementing my hands-on practices, I am also a qualified postnatal doula. I use my doula knowledge and skills to support new mothers through the early days of parenthood via postnatal care and self care classes and birth debriefing courses. I have done extensive study into postnatal practices in traditional societies worldwide and into the neurological changes in women when they give birth. I bring this information together to teach women what to expect and how to utilise the natural hormonal changes that motherhood brings in order to have a happy and peaceful postnatal experience.
My birth debriefing course bring small groups of new mothers together to help facilitate healing from traumatic birth experiences. More information about the structure and content of these courses is available on request.
